FrictionPhD.com is a site devoted to STEM outreach, with a focus on the field of tribology. If you find yourself going “tribo-what?” you’re not alone! Despite being my favorite guess as to what tribology is: no, it is not the study of tribbles.
In short, tribology is the science of interacting surfaces in relative motion. It explores friction, wear, and lubrication of materials. If you’d like to hear how tribology plays into your everyday life, as well as its impact on critical issues such as energy conservation, please check out the TED talk that launched this entire adventure. Based on feedback from this talk, particularly from educators and students, FrictionPhd.com was born.
Content will be posted to cover a variety of backgrounds, ages, and interests. You’ll be able to find things ranging from tribology themed scavenger hunts to technical discussions about state of the art tribology research. Colleagues from the entire tribology community will be contributing. If you have questions you’d like answered or suggestions about content, please reach out! We’d love to hear from you.
